ALVA, Fla. - The Alva community is divided over a proposed golf driving range.

The Lee County Hearing Examiner now has to decide whether approve the builders' permits. If approved, the driving range will be along State Road 80, near Goggin Road.

Both sides got a chance to voice their opinions at Thursday's Hearing Examiner meeting. Several Alva citizens showed up to oppose the driving range.

"This project does not meet any of our needs," said one woman who went up to the podium.

But one man showed up to show support for the project.

"Not every citizen in Alva is not wanting a golf driving range," he said at the meeting.

Michael Fernandez, the lead architect for the driving range, said he believes the community will end up liking the driving range because of the owner.

"I think the people in Alva will just relate to him and this facility, and that's whats gonna make it work," Fernandez said.

Fernandez said tax payers won't be contributing to the cost of the project. He told NBC2 he expects a decision on the permits from the Hearing Examiner within the next couple months.
