CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A black Corvette was spotted parked crookedly and possibly illegally in a handicap spot.

No handicap placard hanging from the rear view mirror was displayed in the photo, which is now generating dozens of complaints online. It was taken at the Cape Coral Walmart Neighborhood Market on Skyline Boulevard.

It is illegal to park in a handicap spot without the proper permit.

“You do have to have your placard up and marked or you have to have that license plate in order to use those spots," Master Cpl. Phil Mullen with the Cape Coral Police Department said.

While it's unclear from the photo if the Corvette had the proper plate, Mullen said it's an ongoing issue that their department's public service aides tackle daily.

“In Cape Coral we are going to enforce the handicap violations so that those that do need it are able to use them. Our police volunteers are out there every day enforcing this," Mullen said.

As far as citations issued that can affect a driver's record, police said it's rare.

“We don’t write actual citations often partially because the driver has to be with the vehicle, and a lot of times it’s parked and there’s nobody at that vehicle."

In 2018, public service aides wrote 409 ordinance violations, which carry a fine of up to $250. As of 2019, 261 violations have been written.
